Intel Open Source UPnP SDK for Linux

Technical Overview

The Intel Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Software Development Kit (SDK) Version 1.0 for Linux helps you, the hardware and software developer, build easy connectivity into common electronic devices. This SDK makes it possible for small computing and other devices:
  • to discover other devices on the network.
  • to remotely control appliances.
  • to share information among devices and the World Wide Web.
In five simple steps, using clear command sequences, UPnP offers easy-to-use device manageability for standalone and networked devices. These steps include:
  1. Device Discovery
  2. Device Description
  3. Presentation
  4. Events and Subscriptions
  5. Control
SDK Features

The UPnP architecture enables discovery and control between devices on a network, independent of particular operating systems, programming languages, or physical network connections. UPnP is also based on existing Internet standards and languages like TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), HTTP (Hypertext Protocol) and XML (Extensible Markup Language).

The Application Programming Interface (API) included in this SDK hides the details of the UPnP mechanics and helps vendors to rapidly make their products UPnP compliant. This SDK is implemented and tested on the Linux OS, and interoperates with UPnP implementations on Windows.

The Intel UPnP SDK Version 1.0, available under an open source distribution license, includes:
  • API and Linux source code to implement UPnP-compliant control points and devices.
  • Commented sample source code.
  • Header files.
  • Documentation.
  • Berkeley-style open source license.

SDK Implementation

The UPnP SDK V. 1.0 for Linux leverages networking services provided by the operating system and packages several UPnP sub-components under a unified API. The Intel UPnP SDK is built on top of the standard TCP/IP stack included in the Linux OS.

This SDK includes basic client and server-side HTTP functionality, including a mini-Web server for exporting description, state and control data from one device to another on a network. This SDK implements SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol), GENA (General Event Notification Architecture), and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) for discovery, eventing, and control respectively.

The Intel UPnP SDK packages the XML parser to enable the interpretation of XML documents. The parser helps you handle DOM (Document Object Model)-based decoding of XML documents for use in devices and control points. Since the XML parser uses a C++ API, the UPnP SDK provides a "C-DOM" C API on top of the XML parser. This additional layer gives you a unified C-based UPnP API for device and control points.
