The Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) has incorporated in California as a not-for-profit organization. The new status, obtained January 1, will give CELF more flexibility to fund open source development work, and create relationships with other organizations, it says.

CELF was founded in June of 2003 by eight CE giants. It maintains a kernel source tree patched to improve Linux startup speed, real-time responsiveness, footprint size, and other characteristics useful in consumer electronic devicess. It released a specification on its first anniversary, last June.

Scott Smyers, who chaired CELF's steering committee previously, will now serve as chairman of CELF's board of directors. Other board members and officers include:
