uClinux VoD stack targets STBs based on Sigma SoCs

EzHomeTech is shipping a uClinux operating system and VoD (video-on-demand) software stack for STBs (set-top boxes) based on a Sigma Designs digital media processor SoC (system-on-chip). The EZV 2.0 stack for Sigma's EM862x supports HTTP and ASF streams of files encoded in common formats, including Microsoft formats, the company says.

Sigma's EM862x chips feature an ARM/RISC-based application processor "for single chipset devices," Sigma says, in addition to decoding engines for various formats, including MPEG-4.10 (H.264), VC-1, WMV9, MPEG-4.2, and MPEG-2. The chip appeared in a reference design for Linux-based DVD players, IP-STBs, and digital media players shipped earlier this month by Toshiba America Electric Components (TAEC).

EzHomeTech says its EZV 2.0 stack aims to provide a turnkey software solution for VoD devices that can play music, video, and photos streamed from Microsoft Media Server or from EzHomeTech's own EzServer product. The product comprises a uClinux OS, an "SSP" middleware layer supporting plug-ins, and an embedded media browser and player. Footprint requirements are 8MB of Flash and 32MB of RAM, and both NTSC and PAL are supported, according to the company.
