eCos starter kits target ColdFire, PVR/STB designs

eCosCentric is shipping two new ports of its commercially-supported open-source embedded OS. The eCosPro Starter Kits are being distributed with Freescale's ColdFire MCF5213 evaluation board, which targets industrial control, and with NXP's Nexperia STB220 reference design for PVRs (personal video recorders) and STBs (set-top boxes).

eCosCentric says it will bundle its eCosPro Starter Kit with Freescale's MCF5213-based M5213EVB evaluation board. The Kit includes a GNU-based toolchain and graphical eCos configuration tool, and can be easily upgraded to a full eCosPro Developer's Kit, according to the company.

The MCF5213 has only 256KB of onboard flash, and therefore does not support uClinux. However, CodeWarrior tools are available for the chip.

Daniel Morris, eCosCentric sales director, stated, "We see strong demand from savvy system designers that wish to deploy eCos on 32-bit microcontrollers, without incurring the costs of external memory components."

Additionally, eCosCentric will bundle its eCosPro Starter kit with a reference design based on NXP Semiconductors's PNX8330 MPEG2/4 source decoder chip. The design targets PVRs (personal video recorders) and decoders for dual terrestrial, satellite, and cable reception.

STB220 reference design
The STB220 design will be distributed with an eCosPro Starter Kit, including RedBoot bootloader, eCos RTOS, graphical configuration tool, and GNU toolchain. It can easily be upgraded to the full eCosPro Developer's Kit.

Additionally, eCosPro offers a "Multimedia Filesystem" for the platform. The filesystem was designed to support "continuous media intensive applications," it says, such as PVR and video jukebox applications.

Morris stated, "The latest generation of Nexperia solutions target high-end applications. Creating the highly reliable Multimedia Filesystem enables us to meet the performance demands and usage patterns of innovative consumer-grade appliances."

Menno Kleingeld, senior marketing director for Philips spin-off NXP Semiconductors, stated, "The Multimedia Filesystem will enhance our STB system solution with simultaneous streaming and recording of multimedia content."

Availability

The eCosPro Starter Kits are being distributed now with NXP's STB220 reference design, and with Freescale's M5213EVB evaluation board.
