TimeSys offers first IXP435 Linux support
May 10, 2007

TimeSys says its suite of online services for embedded Linux developers now offers the first processor-optimized Linux packages and components for Intel's new IXP435, an XScale-based SoC (system-on-chip) aimed at multi-service residential gateways. TimeSys's LinuxLink service previously supported Intel's IXP425 and IXP465 NPUs (network processing units).

Intel was among the first chip vendors to partner with TimeSys on its LinuxLink developer services program, and TimeSys created some of its first "LinuxLinks" for Intel chips such as the IOP3xx and 80219 storage processors. Other available LinuxLinks for Intel processors are listed here.

Intel's IXP435 part

Intel's new IXP435 chip appears to be sampling now as part of a Linux- and VxWorks-based multi-service residential gateway reference design. TimeSys says it validated its IXP435 support using the IXP435T board included with the Intel reference design.

The IXP435 chip itself is based on an XScale core clocked at 667MHz, along with a pair of Intel's NPEs (network processing engines). In addition to residential gateways, it is suitable for a variety of network-related applications, TimeSys said, citing "modular routers for SOHO/small business/residential use, wireless gateways, network printers, and RFID readers."

The IXP435 also integrates a pair of USB 2.0 host controllers -- saving cost compared to external PCI-based USB, Intel maintains. The SoC also features high-speed serial and I2C interfaces, an interface for 16-/32-bit DDR266 or DDRII400 SDRAM, and cryptographic protocol acceleration (SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, MD5, DES, 3DES, AES).

Additionally, "proven" software codecs for IXP4xx-series processors can obviate DSPs (digital signal processors) in some IXP435-based designs, such as VoIP, Intel suggests.

LinuxLink for the IXP435

TimeSys says that its LinuxLink subscription service offers "the most up-to-date embedded Linux resource" for IXP435 customers throughout their complete development cycle. Touted features include:
  • Reference distribution said to "enhances performance," and to provide a starting point for building customized distributions

  • The newest Linux kernels optimized for the IXP435

  • Access to a repository of hundreds of source and binary cross-compiled packages

  • An Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

  • Testing and profiling tools

  • Tools for cross-compiling packages, enabling customers to add their own applications

  • An online environment where development teams can collaborate on distribution design and construction

  • Weekly alerts to notify customers of new content and resources

  • Access to extensive resources and interactive support from TimeSys

TimeSys's newly appointed CEO, Atul Bansal, stated, "We are very pleased to be working closely with Intel to deliver the only Linux solution for their new IXP processor. With LinuxLink, Intel's customers can accelerate their development efforts."

Availability

TimeSys's LinuxLink subscription service for IXP435 is available now. Pricing was not disclosed; however, additional details may be available here.
