| Embedded track added to Linux conference |

 IDG World Expo announced an "Embedded Linux" track for the Mobile Linux Conference program at this August's LinuxWorld conference. The track includes presentations and panels on embedded Linux development, life-cycles, user interfaces, and virtualization, and a tutorial on hacking the Linksys NSLU2 (pictured at left).
As announced last month, the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, scheduled for August 4-7 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, will feature a new Mobile Linux program. In addition to the new embedded track, the program includes tracks on mobile Linux platforms and application development. The Mobile Linux Conference is sponsored by Access, Motorola, Nokia, Trolltech, and Wind River, says IDG World Expo.

The new Embedded Linux track covers "intelligent devices large and small, tethered and wireless, COTS and custom," say the organizers. It will be hosted by William Weinberg (pictured at right) who heads up Linuxpundit.com. Weinberg is also GM of the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS), and "Mobile Linux Weatherman" for the Linux Foundation.
The Embedded Linux track will include the following sessions:- Building intelligent devices with embedded linux -- Panel discussion of commercial and community approaches
- Open-source virtualization -- the right match for embedded Linux
- Linux for connected consumer electronics devices
- A standard for automotive-grade Linux
- GNU/Linux in your car -- How to build a computer for your car
- Embedded virtualization -- Killer app enabler or atomic fly swatter? A panel discussion
- Linux: embedded design and programming -- A tutorial by Suleman Saya, Instructor, University of California Extension in Silicon Valley
- Embedded Linux development: hacking the Linksys NSLU2 -- A tutorial by Michael Anderson, CTO/Chief Scientist, The PTR Group
Stated PTR Group's Anderson, regarding his NSLU2 tutorial, "With the growing popularity of Linux in embedded systems, there are a lot of questions about how it works. This tutorial will give folks a taste of how it's done, and attendees will receive a cool toy to play with when it's over!"
Anderson did not clarify whether the "cool toy" he was referring to was a Linksys NSLU2 (a.k.a. "Slug"), an atomic fly swatter, or just another piece of trade-show swag.
Availability
The sessions and tutorials for the Mobile Linux Conference's Embedded Linux track take place on August 5-7 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The Mobile Linux Conference is included free with all LinuxWorld conference packages. Or, tickets can be purchased separately for $600 (before July 11th). More information may be found here.
As reported before, LinuxWorld will also showcase a new "Linux Garage" attraction. This free exhibit space in the demonstration area will show off "the latest and coolest gadgets based on embedded Linux." The Linux Garage may yet be looking for additional exhibitor candidates, here.
