The 6th Annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE6x) is seeking speakers on a wide range of Linux-related topics including healthcare, education, and "Women in Open Source." The event will be held on Feb. 8-10, 2008 at the Westin Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport.

This year's SCALE conference features exhibitions from IBM, Novell, Plain Black, Debian, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Gentoo, and others. Scheduled presentations include speeches on Haiku (Google), OpenBSD (OpenBSD), Linux momentum in mobile (Motorola), open source telephony with Asterisk (Trixbox), and scale-out file services using Samba and a clustered file system (IBM)

In addition to the general conference, SCALE will once again feature specialized sub-conferences, each of which is seeking papers by Nov. 30. These sub-conferences are:

Demonstrating open source health care systems (DOHCS) -- Potential topics include patient data privacy and security, HL7, the National Health Information Network (NHIN), and regional health information organizations (RHIOs).
Women in Open Source -- Topics include success stories and encouraging girls toward technology careers.
Open source software in education (OSSIE) –- Topics include benefits and hurdles in open source education projects, software availability, and support services.

Unlike past conferences, there does not seem to be a push, this year, for presentations on embedded and mobile Linux topics. However, given the growing interest in Linux-powered handheld devices, such as the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, the Asus Eee PC, and Google's recent announcement of a Linux-based mobile phone stack, we see no reason not to encourage LinuxDevices readers to submit proposals on mobile and embedded Linux topics.

Proposals should be submitted as one-page abstracts including a title, name, affiliation, bio, email, and an optional passport-size photo. Submitters are asked to include a bullet list or brief description of main points, as well as specific presentation technology requirements, and send their proposal via email by Nov. 30.
