Help the IEEE/The Open Group fine-tune its POSIX Certification test suites, and emerge better prepared to certify with a full understanding of the requirements and Web certification system. "The pilot will enable interested parties to shake down their products in preparation for certification," said Andrew Josey of the Open Group, "and also enable IEEE/The Open Group to shake down the certification program prior to launch."

The IEEE last week updated the POSIX standards for system interfaces and shells and utilities. It also announced that test suites were under development.

The Pilot Program entails trying out test suites and the online certification system. You can pilot the VSX-PCTS 2003 test suite for System Interfaces, the VSC-PCTS 2003 test suite for Shell and Utilities, or both. Participating obliges you to take part in a small number of teleconferences. There are no fees to participate in the pilot program.

The fee schedule for certification to the new POSIX standards has yet to be finalized, but is expected to have "an entry level on a par with other similar certification programs such as the LSB certification program," according to Josey. "Two test suites will be made available to those submitting products for certification for no additional fee. Given the low cost of certification after a product has been built that
meets the specifications and passes the tests, we believe the return on investment will be substantial."
