Individuals and corporations can now make tax-deductible gifts to the Mozilla Foundation, thanks to an arrangement with the Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF).

The Mozilla Foundation has applied for non-profit 501(c)3 status, but has not yet cleared the approximately year-long process.

Meanwhile, the Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF) has agreed to serve as fiscal agent for the Mozilla Foundation. The OSAF is a non-profit corporation exempt from federal income taxation under IRS regulation 501(c)3, and donations to the Mozilla Foundation that flow through OSAF will be entirely passed on to the Mozilla Foundation.

The Mozilla Foundation took over responsibility for the popular Mozilla browser after layoffs at America Online (AOL) sent 50 Netscape/Mozilla developers to the unemployment lines in July, 2003. AOL pledged $2 million over 2 years to the project, but more funds are needed.
