Digital media adapter and residential gateway design boasts UPnP, 802.11g

Embedded Linux provider RedSonic and Ethernet device manufacturer Micrel have completed a reference design for an 802.11g wireless Digital Media Adapter (DMA) gateway that is available for licensing by device manufacturers. The DMA is designed for playback of digital media on a TV or stereo system.

The Micrel/RedSonic design is implemented on Micrel's KS8695P single-chip, integrated ARM9 gateway platform, and uses the EM8475 MPEG decoder hardware from Sigma Designs.

RedSonic’s software is based on the emerging connectivity UPnP A/V connectivity standard. Enabled with 802.11g wireless capability, the design will allow media manufacturers to make wireless DMAs that can stream digital media from a PC to a TV anywhere in a networked home, according to RedSonic.

RedSonic says the design supports a wide range of well-known media formats, including:

Movie: Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg4(DivX), QuickTime
Music: MP1, MP2, MP3, WAV, WMA
Photo:
JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG, TIFF
Playlist: M3U, PLS, ASX, RMP

RedSonic is a provider of embedded Linux and technologies in networking, multimedia, security, and digital entertainment. Micrel Semiconductor is a manufacturer of Ethernet SoCs (System on Chips) and switch and physical layer transceiver devices.
