| Cellphone virtualization platform attains security registration |

VirtualLogix (formerly "Jaluna") has joined the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP), and has registered its virtualization product for mobile phones with the organization's "Trusted Environment" recommendations. The company is the first to register a product under the OMTP's new beta-stage "product profile conformance" process, it says.
OMTP
The OMTP is an industry forum that defines requirements for mobile devices. It is funded and driven by large wireless operators, including Cingular Wireless, Hutchison 3G, Orange, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, T-Mobile, and Vodafone, with support from phone hardware vendors Ericsson, Freescale, Motorola, Nokia, and Spansion. Additionally, 44 participants are involved that represent "all parts of the industry," the organization claims, including application software, hardware, and operating systems vendors.
The OMTP comprises working groups devoted to mobile device hardware, software, security, user experience, and technology assessment. Collectively, the working groups have published about a dozen recommendations documents, which can be downloaded here.
VirtualLogix's OMTP statement
VirtualLogix has registered its "VLX for Mobile Handsets" product against the OMTP hardware working group's 46-page Trusted Environment recommendations, thus becoming the first OMTP member to submit a "product profile statement." Such statements are part of a new compliance registration process, currently beta-testing. The process may have been modeled in part after the OSDL's successful compliance registration process for Carrier Grade Linux.
VirtualLogix's product profile statement mainly outlines those few areas in which the product can not comply with recommendations -- typically because the company is not a device manufacturer, nor a carrier. The brief registration document can be downloaded here.
VirtualLogix says that the OMTP's product profile process will help operators and manufacturers "compare and contrast conformance levels across the whole value chain." As an advisor-level participant in the OMTP, the company says it can help market-leading companies architect mobile devices based on the best available security standards.
VirtualLogix Executive VP of corporate strategy Michel Gien stated, "The guidelines and recommendations provided by OMTP ensure that innovative software developments, such as real-time virtualization, can be seamlessly implemented to provide a security architecture with the best end user experience."
Tim Raby, managing director of the OMTP, stated, "With VirtualLogix's product profile contribution, mobile device developers will have better tools to take advantage of the features of open operating systems, such as Linux, without compromising security."
