Linux smartphone hits the street in Hong Kong

E28 has launched its latest Linux smartphone in the Hong Kong market. The company earlier shipped the e2800+ to customers in mainland China. The e2800+, e28's second-generation Linux handset, is a dual-band GSM/GPRS device with sophisticated camera/video features.

The e2800+ builds upon E28's previous e2800 model, which was the world's first commercially available Linux smartphone, E28 says. It runs an embedded Linux OS for smartphones developed by E28.

E28 touts features in the new e2800+ that include a 300K pixel camera, improved 65K color display, twin ARM9 processors clocked at 300MHz, and up to 10 hours of continuous video recording and playback with a 1GB SD/MMS memory card. The camera lens is located on the phone’s flip cover, so users can easily film themselves, E28 says. The camera and video player support a range of video formats, including MPEG4, H.263, 3GP and MP4 formats. The camera also supports Direct Print, through the PictBridge industry standard.

"Video is the next giant stepping stone for the mobile phone after photographs," said CEO Roger Kung.
