Trolltech renames, updates, expands Qt/Embedded

Trolltech has updated and renamed its graphics toolkit and development kit for embedded Linux devices. "Qtopia Core" is based on a Linux port of the company's Qt 4.0 development framework, and replaces its earlier Qt/Embedded product. It targets "single-application products" built on embedded Linux.

Qtopia Core includes a windowing system
According to Trolltech, Qtopia Core is based on a Linux port of Qt 4.0, along with libraries and graphical tools. Typical target applications include automotive automation, medical devices, point-of-sale, office equipment, and image processing machines.

Trolltech's Qt development framework comprises libraries and tools aimed at allowing native binaries for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux to be built from a single source code tree. Its Qtopia products specifically target embedded Linux applications. Both have proven popular with embedded Linux developers; for example, Motorola uses Qt/Embedded to build the user interfaces in its Linux-based mobile phones, while some 30 phone vendors use Qtopia Phone Edition in Linux-powered mobile designs, Trolltech said in late November, 2005.

Qtopia Core includes "all the latest Qt features," Trolltech says, including advanced graphics, internationatilazation features such as right-to-left text, and tool integration. Alignment with Qt 4 also allows customers to benefit from Qt's worldwide developer community, the company says.

Expanding product line

Additionally, Trolltech says it plans to expand its "Qtopia" product line with three new products. In addition to Qtopia Phone Edition, Qtopia PDA Edition, and the newly released Qtopia Core product, the Qtopia line will eventually include:

Qtopia Platform -- For "multi-application products." Qtopia Core with application management and user interface capabilities. Targets consumer electronics and other advanced, multi-application products
Qtopia Profiles -- Qtopia Platform with key enablers for embedded Linux development aimed at specific vertical markets
Qtopia Editions -- Solutions aimed at targeted product segments

CEO Haavard Nord stated, "Qtopia Core supplies the infrastructure needed for developing on embedded Linux, [letting] developers focus on value-added innovation."
