The Open Group's annual Real-Time Embedded Systems (RTES) Forum has issued a call for presentations on "assured systems." The Forum will be held in conjunction with The Open Group's 17th annual Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, Jan. 28 to Feb. 1 in San Francisco.

The Open Group maintains and offers certification for standards such as POSIX (portable operating system interface), embedded real-time POSIX, the LSB (Linux standards base), CORBA (common object request broker architecture), DCE (distributed computing environment), LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol), Openi18N (open internationalization), WAP (wireless access protocol) and others. It is perhaps best known for maintaining the UNIX standard, but has actively cultivated open source community involvement for at least four years.

RTES is seeking papers for the opening "Research Day" session of its week-long event. RTES is specifically looking for papers on technical issues related to the development of assured systems via composition of assured components, as well as tools and techniques for achieving high confidence in security, safety, and critical application domains, organizers say.

Suggested topic areas for the presentations include:

Tools and techniques for achieving high assurance and high robustness
Incorporating security into designs
Functional interoperability
Configuration validation
Compositional or layered assurance
Goal-based assurance (rather than prescriptive, standards-based)
Security policies
Tools and techniques for verifying correctness of design and implementation
Meeting high assurance requirements in dynamic environments
Common terminology for high-robustness security and safety
Surveys of related research work
Open source in high-assurance systems
Protection profile progress reports
Lessons learned from current/recent evaluation/certification experiences
Lessons learned from deployment
Proposals for standards
Related topics from other TOG Forums, such as Security, Real-Time Java, etc.

The following summarizes the RTES Forum's proceedings:

Monday, Jan. 28 -- Research Day presentations -- Success through sharing and cooperation
Tuesday -- Dependability through assuredness (focus on formal methods tools)
Wednesday (and evening) -- Towards high assurance solutions, from definitions through certification (evening -- workgroup planning for 2008)
Thursday (and evening) -- Architecting to the edge, plus ADML to AADL
Friday (half day) -- RTES Forum meeting planning for 2008

In addition, there may be a parallel JSR 302 SC Java Technology Expert Group running on Monday through Wednesday. Meanwhile, the larger Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, which concludes on January 30th, will feature presentations on SOA, enterprise architect certification issues, and TOGAF (The Open Group Architectural Framework). Like the RTE Forum event, the conference will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.

Research Day presentations can be from five to 45 minutes and can be given remotely. Presenters should submit a one-page abstract, short bio, and contact information no later than Dec. 14th to rdelong@engr.scu.edu. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by Dec. 28th.
