Tools aim to smooth RTOS-to-Linux porting

MontaVista has partnered with code analysis tool specialist Klocwork on tools and services to help port applications from legacy RTOSes (real-time operating systems) to MontaVista Linux. The partnership revolves around Klocwork's inForce and inSight products, which the companies say have been enhanced with custom reports targeting deployment on MontaVista Linux.

According to MontaVista, the Klocwork tools "facilitate very fast and effective ports, and also jump-start the process of re-factoring ported applications to take advantage of the power of embedded Linux."

Klocwork's inForce product generates "Porting Reports" that identify legacy RTOS system calls, flag needed substitutions, and highlight APIs covered by the legacy RTOS emulation library in MontaVista Linux. The reports identify include file relationships, provide header file analysis, and discover anomalies such as duplicate definitions, according to MontaVista.

Klocwork's inSight can further enhance the code in the new Linux environment, according to MontaVista.

"Using the custom reporting capabilities of the Klocwork suite, Klocwork and MontaVista Software have created reports tailored for MontaVista Linux," said Bill Weinberg, MontaVista Software director of strategic marketing.
