| Tiny module embeds 802.11b/g in mobile devices |

[Updated Jan. 11, 2005] -- SyChip has unveiled an embeddable, multi-chip, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity module targeting SDIO cards, handheld devices such as smartphones, PDAs, gaming gadgets, and media players. The 13 x 16 x 1.7mm WLAN6100EB consumes under 500 uA in power-save mode, and supports Linux, among other OSes, SyChip says.

Functions included within the tiny, "plug-and-play" module include a baseband/MAC processor, VCO, power amplifier, RF-transceiver, balun, EEPROM, clock cscillator, T/R switch, bandpass filter, and software driver. Additionally, the module supports three host interfaces -- CompactFlash, SPI (serial peripheral interface), and SDIO -- enabling it to interface with numerous host processors. It also supports multiple mobile device software platforms, including Linux, Windows Mobile, Palm, and Symbian.
 6100EB block diagram (click for larger image) According to SyChip, the WLAN6100EB provides advanced power save functions, security features compliant with IEEE 802.11i, Quality of Service (QoS) traffic prioritization conformant with IEEE 802.11e, and an "advanced signaling interface" offering enhanced co-existence with Bluetooth devices. The company offers a full suite of test and integration tools, it says.

The WLAN6100EB comes in a QFN (Quad Flat No-Lead) package that enables direct attachment to a PC board using standard surface mount technology.
Samples are available now, with volume production scheduled for the second quarter. Budgetary pricing is $29 in quantities of 50,000 units.
