Linux support comes to rugged VMEbus SBC for military applications

TimeSys has delivered the first Linux SDK for the Aitech Defense Systems C100, a VME-bus SBC targeting rugged military applications. The SDK aims to save money and development time by providing development tools, drivers, and a ready-to-run, single-kernel, real-time Linux kernel licensed in a royalty-free model.

The Aitech C100 6U VME single-slot SBC features a 733MHz Motorola PowerPC G4+ MPC7455 microprocessor with on-chip L1 and L2 caches. The board offers a variety of I/O interfaces, including one Gigabit Ethernet and two Fast Ethernet ports, redundant MIL-STD-1553B ports, two IEEE 1394a FireWire ports, two USB 2.0 ports, eight serial ports (six high-speed ports and two UART ports), and up to 16 general-purpose discrete I/O channels. Available in conduction and air-cooled versions, the C100 is vibration and shock resistant for use in rugged military applications.

TimeSys claims its Linux RTOS provides the industry’s "highest performance Linux operating system meeting the range of performance requirements typical of rugged military computer systems," and that its Linux RTOS provides "the industry’s only single-kernel Linux real-time operating system." Like other TimeSys SDKs, the new offering includes certified device drivers for each peripheral, hundreds of Linux utilities and libraries, certified Windows and Linux-hosted GNU toolchains, and optional Windows- and Linux-hosted TimeStorm integrated development environments, according to TimeSys.

“Many of our customers are looking to reduce costs through the use of Linux and open source software solutions,” said Ralph Palmer, Director of North American Sales and Marketing for Aitech Defense Systems Inc.

“Embedded Linux solutions such as the TimeSys Linux RTOS SDK offer a royalty-free path to reducing development cost and risk, by providing a true Linux real-time operating system with our Eclipse-powered full-featured IDE, TimeStorm,” said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman.

The TimeSys Linux RTOS SDK for the Aitech C100 VME SBC is now available direct from TimeSys or from its sales and distribution channels. Prices start at $2,395 per developer seat, royalty-free.
