Denx Software Engineering has announced that its embedded Linux tools and OS are available for a general-purpose PowerPC SoC from AMCC. Embedded Linux Development Kit (ELDK) includes a graphical configuration manager, free real-time extensions, cross-development tools, and more, and is bundled with AMCC's Linux evaluation kit for the 440EP.

According to Denx, AMCC's 440EP evaluation kit is among the most comprehensive kits available today. Along with a custom board from Embedded Planet, it includes sample applications, system-level benchmarks, and hardware design files. AMCC launched its 440EP evaluation kit in late June.

Denx says its ELDK distribution and tools provides a complete, powerful development environment for embedded and real-time systems. All components are licensed under the GPL or another free license, and all source code is included, the company says.

ELDK includes:

Cross development tools (compiler, assembler, linker etc.)
Native tools (shell, commands, and libraries) that will run on the target system
Firmware that can be ported to new boards and processors
A Linux kernel including all device drivers, board-support functions, etc.
RTAI (real time application interface) real-time Linux kernel extension
SELF (simple embedded Linux framework), a graphical run-time creation and configuration tool

Denx's ELDK is used in about two percent of all embedded Linux development projects, suggests the most recent LinuxDevices reader survey. The company is able to provide ELDK at no cost, because it makes money marketing its embedded Linux development services. See our for details.
