Entry-level network appliance platform runs Linux

Taiwanese systems integrator AR Infotek has built an "entry-level" 1U rackmount server appliance platform around an AMD x86-compatible embedded processor. The Teak 3258 is based on a passively cooled Geode LX-800 processor, and features soldered-down RAM, and two LAN bypass ports.

The Teak 3258 supports standard PC operating systems such as Linux, and targets low-power, high-reliability applications in small- to medium-sized offices and businesses, according to AR Infotek.

AMD's Geode LX@800 is an x86-compatible SoC (system-on-chip) with typical power requirements of about 0.9 Watts. The chip debuted in May of 2005, as the first new Geode SoC following AMD's acquisition of the Geode line from National Semiconductor in mid-2003. The chip has proven popular in a wide variety of embedded boards, systems, and products; however, AMD recently closed the design facility where it was designed.

AR Infotek says the Geode processor's low cooling and power requirements add reliability and stability, as does soldered-down DDR SDRAM, which is available in capacities of up to 512MB. Additional touted features of the Teak 3258 include:
  • CS5536 companion south bridge chip
  • 4 x Intel 82551ER LAN Fast Ethernet chipsets
  • Two LAN ports have BYPASS function
  • Single IDE controller supports two channels
  • Includes bracket for two 2.5- or 3.5-inch drives
  • Optional CompactFlash Type II slot
  • 200-Watts PFC power supply inside the chassis
  • 9-pin RS-232 serial port on front panel
  • 2 x USB 2.0 ports on front panel
  • One PCI slot for crypto cards or other expansion
Additionally, the Teak 3258 has passed "strict safety verification testing," according to AR Infotek.

Availability

The Teak 3258 appears to be available now. Pricing was not disclosed.

AR Infotek also offers the Teak 3011 security appliance platform, also based on a Geode LX@800, and the high-powered Teak 5052 platform, based on an Intel Dual-core EM64T Xeon processor with 1066MHz system bus.
