Former MontaVista exec joins networking firm

Peder Ulander, who served as MontaVista's VP of marketing between 2004 and 2006, has been named VP of product strategy at Pure Networks. In his new position, Ulander will help the Seattle-based wireless home network management software firm expand its broadband strategy.

Ulander held positions at Symantec and Apple, and was a senior product marketing manager at Linux server appliance manufacturer Cobalt Networks until the company was acquired by Sun Microsystems. He worked at Sun until his departure for MontaVista and the VP of marketing post in July, 2004. He then returned to Sun in March 2006 to assume the position of senior VP of software marketing. There, he was said to have overseen strategies for Sun's Linux and open source initiatives, including the Java Desktop System, Sun Ray ultra-thin client, and the StarOffice Productivity Suite.

Ulander's nearly two-year interlude at MontaVista coincided with a time of both growth and turmoil at the embedded Linux software and tools firm. In his last months there, he was kept busy explaining management moves, including the decision to replace founder Jim Ready as CEO, and he announced a restructuring that was rumored to have cut the workforce by some 20 percent.

At Pure Networks, which is known for its Network Magic home networking software, Ulander will help to create a strategy for developing a "comprehensive offering of networking solutions for broadband and Internet service providers," says the company. In particular, he will oversee efforts to help providers reduce support and deployment costs of home network products.

In his statement Ulander spoke of addressing "a whole host of support issues as service providers are expected to help consumers address the complexities and incompatibilities of connected devices."
