Device-oriented tools vendor offers free evaluation
Feb. 01, 2007

Encirq has released a freely downloadable version of its software development framework for developing high-performance data management components for smart devices. DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite includes an interactive, online tutorial said to demonstrate efficient ways to manage data in embedded applications, according to the company.

Encirq describes its DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite as a self-contained environment that provides developers with everything needed to create device applications using the DeviceSQL framework. The accompanying tutorial steps users through a primer on device data management and includes exercises with example code and an MP3 demo application, according to the company.

DeviceSQL consists of the DeviceSQL programming language, modeled after Oracle's industry-standard PL/SQL, development and prototyping tools, starter applications, and run-time service libraries -- called "Platform Environments" -- that abstract out the hardware and operating system. Validated Platform Environments are available for various 16-, 32-, and 64-bit processor architectures, as well as for popular embedded OSes such as Windows CE, Linux, VxWorks, and ThreadX, according to Encirq.

Users of the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite also have access to the DevZone area on the company's website. There, developers can participate in community-based forums, get tips and pointers from Encirq technical staff,, and access additional technical resources, Encirq says.

The freely available Quick Start Suite includes a perpetual, non-commercial use license for Windows environments, according to the company. Commercial use, as well as the ability to deploy developed applications onto a non-Windows target platform -- requires the developer to obtain an appropriate DeviceSQL Platform Environment and commercial-use license.

According to Encirq CTO Eugene Buechele, "The Quick Start Suite makes it simple to learn advanced, yet easy-to-use approaches for managing data, while familiarizing users with the control and performance they achieve using DeviceSQL. This allows developers to easily self-educate, evaluate, and build prototype solutions, resulting in dramatic proof points, all without risking an investment in new software."
