A story has been posted at KernelTrap.org, recapping some recent discussions on the Linux Kernel Mailing List about the relative merits of five journaling filesystems available in the 2.6.0-test2 Linux kernel.

The discussion began when Grant Miner posted some benchmark results for intensive write/sync operations on these filesystems:

reiser4
reiserfs
ext3
xfs
jfs

Peter Chubb responded by noting that filesystems tend to be optimized either for fast reads or fast writes, making the benchmark as used a little one-sided.

Andrew Morton then noted that ext2, the non-journaling, default filesystem for Linux should be included as a baseline for filesystem benchmarks.

Still, interesting observations and conclusions are reached.
