Linux PDA specialist Empower says it will demonstrate a hardware/software reference design for handheld devices, at a Texas Instruments (TI) development conference in Dallas this week. The LDK5912 development kit includes TI's OMAP5912 development board, along with Empower's Linux implementation for PDAs, with example code and documentation.

Empower's LDK5912 includes the company's "LinuxDA" Linux preinstalled on a TI OMAP5912 starter kit, which normally comes preinstalled with MontaVista Linux. The Empower kit also includes example applications that demonstrate how LinuxDA can interact with DSP codecs, the company says, and documentation related to using TI's Code Composer Studio IDE (integrated development environment) to develop DSP codecs, and download them via JTAG to the TI board.

TI's worldwide SoC platform manager, Greg Mar, stated, "The LDK5912 is ideal for high-performance, real-time signal processing with low-power consumption."

Empower's VP of sales and marketing, Alex Romanov, stated, "[The LDK5912] will benefit developers of devices such as smart phones, PDAs, mobile data terminals, and other wireless handheld electronics who require their products to be smaller, faster, and more powerful."

Availability

Empower expects to sell its LDK5912 for $900, a $600 premium over TI's OMAP5912 starter kit. It will demonstrate the product at TI's developer conference this week, but has not announced availability.

Empower says it is currently shipping an OMAP5910 development kit, based on another chip in TI's OMAP59xx series, with support available from Wipro. That product was licensed by ODM Technologies, it says.
