Embedded BSD specialist Wasabi Systems will collaborate with Intel on an optimized GNU toolchain for Intel XScale technology microprocessors. Wasabi expects the benchmark-driven work to broadly benefit open-source embedded development projects where the GNU tools are the "toolchain of choice," including projects on Linux, Wasabi Certified NetBSD, and others.

Intel's low-power, high-performance XScale Technology processors primarily target storage, networking, and handheld applications.

Wasabi says it will validate the GNU toolchain on Linux and Windows/Cygwin hosts for multiple Intel XScale Technology targets by running benchmarks on "bare metal" and open source distributions of Linux. Wasabi is also coordinating submission of its improvements to the Free Software Foundation.

Wasabi collaborates with Intel on a range of embedded and storage software solutions and counts Intel Capital among its investors. Wasabi says it has built a team of leading toolchain engineers and is now uniquely positioned to provide services related to GCC, binutils, GDB, and other components of the GNU toolchain.

"Wasabi Systems' performance optimizations in GCC (the GNU compiler collection) should provide another option for improving our customers' ability to utilize the advanced features of our XScale processors," commented Dave Boehmer, director of applications and platform engineering for Intel's Storage Components division.
