| Embedded Linux vendor adds IPv4/IPv6 stack |

A year after acquiring safety-critical networking specialist Interpeak, Wind River has started shipping an advanced networking add-on for its Linux- and VxWorks-based development platforms. The "Advanced Networking Technologies" add-on includes dual IPv4/IPv6 routing, security, and management stacks, and primarily targets NEPs (network equipment providers) developing mobility, security, and wireless infrastructure.
In March of 2006, Wind River paid $20 million for Interpeak, a Swedish networking software vendor offering stacks for routers, access equipment, WiFi nodes, and small-footprint networked devices. Interpeak was noted for shipping the first TCP/IP stacks for Linux hosts and routers that were certified "IPv6-ready."
Wind River's new Advanced Networking Technologies suite includes a "core" networking component said to offer dual IPv4/IPv6 support, and to offer "IPv6 phase2 logo certification." Other components, as listed by Wind River, include:- Security -- IPsec, IKE v1, IKE v2, cryptography offloading, SSL, SSH, 802.1x, EAP framework, NAT, firewall
- Wireless networking and wireless security -- 802.11 a/b/g; 802.1x, 802.11i, WPA/WPA2
- Mobile IP -- MIP home agent, foreign agent, and mobile node
- Network Management -- SNMPv1/v2/v3, AgentX, CLI, Web
- Routing -- policy-based routing, virtual routing redundancy protocol (VRRP), equal cost multi-path routing (ECMP)
- Quality of service -- ALT-Q, differentiated services (DiffServ)
Kuljeet Kalkat, VP of product management at Wind River, stated, "This product set [can] improve system performance [and] minimize latency and footprint for core, edge, access, and endpoint network elements."
Paul Senior, CTO Airspan Networks, stated, "Wind River [is] the only vendor [offering] all the necessary development components: real-time operating system, device management, high performance router stack, and advanced networking technologies."
Mike Langlois, president at LangloisGroup, stated, "Commercially available, standards-based components like Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies will contribute to the adoption of COTS-based solutions in networking infrastructures."
Availability
Advanced Networking Technologies is available now as a single add-on bundle to all Wind River Linux Edition platforms, including the latest 1.5 versions. It also comes standard in VxWorks 6.5, and can be added on piecemeal to earlier releases of VxWorks, the company said.
Another IPv6-enabled TCP/IP stack for Wind River Linux may be available from LVL7. Additionally, Wind River competitor MontaVista touted IPv6 support in the latest 5.0 release of its flagship "Pro" commercial Linux implementation.
