Linux-based 3G WAP does broadband over cellular networks

Possio AB has enhanced its PX30 wireless access point (WAP) with 3G networking capabilities. The company claims the PX30 is the first access point to allow users to connect to the Internet through 3G (third-generation) mobile networks, which carry Internet data at broadband speeds. The device targets 3G mobile operators.

According to Possio, the PX30 can bring broadband wireless Internet service to small sites such as cafes, temporary hotspots such as building and event sites, mobile hot-spots such as buses and limos, and hot-spots in locations without a wired backhaul alternative. It can also be used, Possio says, by mobile-only carriers wishing to offer broadband Internet service, and in data acquisition and remote management applications such as M2M (machine-to-machine) applications.

Possio filed a patent in 2002 for local to cellular routers, and the company launched the PX30, its second-generation wireless router product targeting enterprises, in early 2004. A third-generation product targeting residential applications is under development, with delivery expected in Q3, 2004. The company says it is in the process of completing several customer-specific applications based on its current wireless access point platform, with manufacturing to follow based on volume commitments.

"With our Wireless LAN over 3G solution, users get an ADSL-like experience and we are overwhelmed by the number of applications that 3G operators are interested in," says CEO David Thorberg.

Product Manager Patrik Nilsson said, "Our current wireless router supports GPRS, UMTS FDD, and UMTS TDD on the WAN side and Wireless LAN, Ethernet, and Bluetooth on the user side. We will soon support EDGE, CDMA 1x, and iMode, which makes Wireless LAN over 3G an even more exciting opportunity."
