Lineo contributes MIPS port to RTAI real-time Linux add-on
Jan. 24, 2002

Salt Lake City, UT -- (press release excerpt) -- Lineo, Inc. today announced a port to the Real-Time Application Interface (RTAI) to address the MIPS family of processors. Embedded developers working with MIPS-based systems are now able to support microsecond critical real-time tasks, such as those found within the communications, control, networking, automotive and military fields. Lineo has released generic MIPS support to the open source RTAI project, which is now available for download at the RTAI website.

"Embedded software developers often need mission-critical response times that the multi-millisecond, worst-case latencies of Linux can't provide," said Alford Frost, Lineo SVP marketing and business development. "RTAI provides a high-performance, real-time solution for Linux with a rich set of core services and schedulers for system tasks that require high performance, hard real-time guarantees for microsecond critical applications. Linux alone can't guarantee microsecond responses even after scheduling enhancements have been applied."

Lineo offers an commercial RTAI board support package (BSP) add-in for Lineo Embedix SDK 2.0 for developers who desire a full-featured development environment for embedded systems or for developers who simply do not want to expend man-months of effort to integrate open source code to new hardware. The BSP add-in builds upon the existing OS and tools functionality of the Embedix BSP by providing fully optimized, board specific support for RTAI, along with necessary hooks for seamless integration with the Embedix SDK tool-chain. This combination yields a full end-to-end, cross-development and deployment environment. Previous Lineo RTAI support for x86 and PPC processors is now supplemented with support for the MIPS processor family. The $1495 RTAI add-in for the IDT 79S334 development board, is now available for integration with the Lineo Embedix SDK and associated Lineo board support package.
