LinuxWorld adds Mobile Linux pavilion
Mar. 09, 2006

The LinuxWorld Expo in Boston next month will feature a mobile Linux expo area and conference track aimed at helping attendees "evaluate their enterprise mobile device strategies," according to organizer IDG. Set for the April 3-6, the event will also feature PalmSource as a platinum sponsor.

LinuxWorld organizers were rumored last December to be considering, pending exhibitor interest, an "Invisible Linux" pavilion modeled after a similar, successful expo area at a LinuxWorld show in Germany. Respun as the "Mobile Linux Pavilion," the addition now appears to have been made possible by the addition of PalmSource as a platinum sponsor.

Other Pavilion exhibitors will include the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum, IDG says.

LinuxWorld organizers also announced mobile and embedded conference tracks late last month, featuring dozens of presentations from representatives of the OSDL, Funambol, PalmSource, MontaVista, Wind River, and others.

IDG's CEO of expos, David Korse, stated, "There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux."

LiPS president Haila Wang stated, "LinuxWorld is an ideal forum to [foster] our commitment to specifying an application development environment for Linux-based mobile, fixed and convergence phones that will enable developers to write applications and have them run on any LiPS-compliant phone profile."

The OSDL's Bill Weinberg stated, "LinuxWorld provides a high profile venue to showcase [our Mobile Linux Initiative], and MLI member offerings, and to advocate the end-to-end deployment of Linux, from communications infrastructure to wireless handsets, from the enterprise out to mobile clients, and beyond."

PalmSource's senior director of partner marketing, Linda Streb, stated, "PalmSource is committed to further building and enriching a broader mobile Linux ecosystem -- much like we have done with the Palm Powered Economy."

Another tradeshow that week -- Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose -- also has several mobile and embedded Linux sessions planned.
