Trolltech reports that its developer-friendly, Linux-based "Greenphone" was named "best embedded Linux product or initiative" at LinuxWorld, London. Additionally, the company's Qtopia Phone Edition (QPE) stack won a mobile phone tools award presented by a Chinese trade magazine devoted to mobile phone multimedia.

According to Trolltech, the Linux/Qtopia-powered Greenphone received "best embedded Linux product or initiative" at the UK Linux and Open Source Awards 2006, presented at LinuxWorld, London. The device is a working GSM/GPRS mobile phone that can be re-flashed with modified Linux-based firmware, via a mini-USB port. It's meant to jumpstart a third-party native application ecosystem for Linux-based mobile phones, Trolltech says.

Trolltech's QPE (Qtopia Phone Edition) graphical application framework and application suite, meanwhile, won an award for "best mobile phone multimedia application development tool," at the China mobile phone multimedia application conference 2006, sponsored by MobileChina Media Magazine.

Mr. Pu Yuanbin, chief editor of MobileChina Media, stated, "The awards of the competition represent the different suggestions and comments from industry professionals, government officials, and media organizations, as well as the online voters. Trolltech's Qtopia Phone Edition is the leading application platform and user interface for Linux-based mobile phones."

Trolltech's VP of marketing, Margaret McLeod, added, "Greenphone, which is based on Qtopia Phone Edition, is becoming the acknowledged symbol of the industry's desire for open mobile phone development. Its adoption by developers who are keen to create innovative and enhanced applications answers the market need for an alternative to closed, proprietary mobile phones."

Trolltech unveiled Greenphone in August, at the LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco. It began shipping the device a month later, as an optional add-on to its QPE 4 SDK (software development kit), which can be licensed commercially or under the GPL.

Both Greenphone and QPE are available now.
