MontaVista says its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) distribution is shipping as an "integrated part" of Motorola's "Centellis 3000" line of AdvancedTCA-based servers. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 4.0 supports several control-plane blades for the servers, which target "next-generation wireless and wireline telecommunications infrastructure equipment," the companies say.

Motorola's Centellis 3000 series comprises both 19-inch and 23-inch wide ATCA shelves capable of housing a variety of "payload blades." Available blades supported under MontaVista CGE include:

MontaVista calls its CGL product "the industry's most full-featured, deployment-proven Carrier Grade Linux." CGE 4.0 is based on a 2.6-series Linux kernel, and is specifically designed for the highly availability requirements of carrier grade applications, MontaVista says.

MontaVista CTO Jim Ready stated, "MontaVista and Motorola understand the importance of providing customers with open, fully integrated systems that act as a common, carrier-grade platform. Motorola has chosen MontaVista as their operating system of choice to deliver the Centellis 3000 systems."

Wendy Vittori, GM of embedded communications computing at Motorola, stated, "Our customers are moving to an open standards-based platform. By integrating MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition into our Centellis 3000 communications servers, we are offering our joint customers a standards-based platform that will allow them to focus their efforts on developing and deploying next generation applications."

Additionally, MontaVista announced that its CGE 4.0 OS will be available on Motorola's forthcoming Centellis 1000 series, based on the MicroTCA architecture, and on Motorola's "Avantellis" high-availability platform.
