Embedded-specific security suite gains hardware acceleration

Mocana is shipping a version of its embedded security suite optimized for Freescale's newest PowerQUICC and ColdFire embedded processors. The company says its Embedded Security Suite offers a much smaller footprint than open source security software, along with higher performance, thanks to an asynchronous architecture that better supports hardware acceleration.

Additionally, Mocana has joined Freescale's Developers Alliance Program, and is ready to assist device developers with security implementations, it says.

Mocana's modular Embedded Security Suite includes:

SSL/TLS server
SSL/TLS client
SSH server
SSH client
RADIUS client
IPsec
IKE

Mocana says a full installation of the Suite has a footprint of 110KB, compared to more than 500KB for an SSL and SSH implementation based on open source software. Additionally, Mocana says open source software solutions have a synchronous architecture that makes hardware optimization inefficient, making them slower.

Mocana hopes its hardware accelerated security suite will help developers implement high security on devices with memory and performance limitations. Target markets for the Suite include VoIP (voice-over-IP), IP video, aerospace and defense, industrial automation and control, automotive, consumer electronics, and retail point-of-sale.

Mocana says its customers include Nortel Networks, AMX Corporation, Centillium, Radvision, and Performance Technologies, and that its technology is shipping on "millions of devices." The Suite supports 12 operating systems, and Mocana partners include MontaVista and other Linux providers, it says.

Bill Krakar, Tools Program Manager at Freescale, said, "Mocana solutions are built from the ground up with an asynchronous core, [and] enable our customers to fully leverage our hardware cryptography acceleration capabilities."
