Low-power SBCs boast Mark chipsets, support Linux

Datasound Laboratories (DSL) is shipping three compact SBCs (single-board computers) based on Via "Mark" Corefusion chipsets clocked at 533MHz. The company says its Mark-based PC/104, ISA-slot, and 3.5-inch form-factor SBCs offer an upgrade path for embedded designs based on Via's earlier C3 and Eden processors.

Via launched Mark two years ago, along with another two-chip embedded chipset codenamed "Luke." The Mark chipset integrates an Eden core up to 1GHz with a CLE266 northbridge. One interesting feature of Mark is the presence of an ISA or "PC" bus -- increasingly a rarity these days, but a feature still required in numerous industrial and embedded applications.

DSL boards based on Via's Mark chipset all feature the 533MHz version, and support passively cooled operation. They all include ISA buses, along with an integrated CRT/LCD controller supporting 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB of shared system memory, for resolutions up to SXGA (1280 x 1024).

- I/O includes two serial ports, floppy and E-IDE interfaces, a parallel port, 10/100 LAN, USB, AC97 audio, mouse/keyboard ports
- 3.5 x 3.8 inches (90 x 96mm)
- Takes 2.2A of +5V power
- -20 to +60 degrees Celsius
ICOP-6242 half-height ISA board:
- 128MB of onboard RAM
- I/O includes RS232, RS232/485, floppy and E-IDE, parallel, 2 x USB, 10/100 LAN, and mouse/keyboard
- 7.25 x 4.8 inches (184 x 122mm)
- Takes 2.05A of +5V power
- -20 to +60 degrees Celsius
ICOP-6247-6S 3.5-inch board:
- 256MB of onboard RAM
- CompactFlash Type I/II slot
- I/O includes six serial ports, floppy and E-IDE, parallel, 3 x USB, 10/100 LAN, and mouse/keyboard
- Consumes +5V power
- 5.7 x 4 inches (144 x 102mm)

All boards operate between -20 and +60 degrees Celsius.

DSL spokesperson Steve Rye said, "The imminent obsolescence of the VIA Eden and C3 CPUs and the consequential availability issues with board level products using these parts leaves OEMs, systems builders, and integrators with a real dilemma."

Availability

The ICOP-6270, ICOP-6242, and ICOP-6247-6S are available now. The boards come with Linux drivers. A Windows XP Embedded evaluation image that will "comfortably reside" in 256MB of Flash is also available, DSL says.
