Telecom infrastructure software gains DSP support

Telecom RTOS (real-time operating system) and HA (high-availability) middleware vendor Enea has launched a new product aimed at helping developers and administrators control, monitor, and debug DSP (digital signal processor) farms. "dSpeed" supports DSP management processors running Linux, and works with DSP clusters based on Enea's OSEck RTOS for DSPs.

dSpeed targets 3G carrier infrastructure equipment such as media gateways, packet gateways, and transcoders. It also targets base stations for various 3G protocols, including WiMAX, CDMA, and others.

The product comprises a runtime component that executes on the DSP itself, along with client software residing on the DSP farm's "host processor" -- "typically a PowerPC or Intel part running a Linux [operating system]," according to Chris Lanfear, product marketing director at Enea.

dSpeed is said to provide management functions that include start up and configuration, error handling, monitoring and supervision, event notification, logging and trace, diagnostics and statistics, and "in-field post mortem debug." dSpeed appears to include Enea's highly scalable Linx IPC (interprocess communications) stack, and is said to support close integration with Element, Enea's freshly updated HA middleware stack and development kit.

Virginia Walker, VP of strategy at Enea, stated, "Up until this point, the absence of a commercial software platform targeting advanced DSP applications has left network equipment designers saddled with the high cost and risk associated with writing their own DSP management software."

According to Gret Tiedemann, director of ATCA at Mercury Computer Systems, "The ability to monitor and report DSP status and performance, coupled with enhanced system maintenance, will help to improve our customers' R&D experience."

Tim Van de Walle, marketing manager at Embedded Planet, added,"Our P-8548A AdvancedMC platform along with the Enea dSpeed platform host management system delivers a strong value proposition."

Availability

dSpeed appears to be available now, or will ship soon. Enea demonstrated the product at the ATCA Summit this week in Santa Clara. Pricing was not disclosed.
