New audio-enabled Super-H board gains hard real-time Linux BSP

Lineo Solutions will release a uLinux Consumer Electronics Edition (CE Edition) board support package (BSP) for a new Renesas audio board targeting handheld terminals, point-of-sale (POS) devices, and industrial applications. The BSP features a hard real-time kernel that will be contributed to the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) source tree.

The Renesas audio board, tentatively named the MS7760CP01P, is expected to ship in April, with the uLinux BSP following April 25th. The board will feature an SH7760 'Camelot' processor with integrated SH-4 RISC CPU core, and will support key input and audio I/O. An LCD touchscreen, IDE hard drive interface, and Ethernet networking support will be available through expansion boards.

Lineo Solutions Executive Director of Engineering Akira Kobayashi says CE Edition supports hard real-time, and is "ideal for use in devices that require micro-second-level real-time performance." CE Edition BSPs operate in conjunction with Lineo Solutions's Elite embedded Linux development tool.

Lineo Solutions summarizes the features of CE Edition 1.0 as follows:

Small Footprint/Quick Boot
- ROM: 2MB and above/ RAM: 2MB and above
- Support Kernel XIP
- ulibc: Compactly reconfigured glibc (from ver. 1.1)
uLinux Realtime
- Hard Realtime in Linux kernel space
- POSIX compliant pthread I/F specifications
Power Management Framework
- Non-BIOS-based APM-related I/F support
IPv6 fundamental support and IPv4/6 support
Enhanced Memory Management
Lots of Device Drivers
- HotPlug support

Lineo Solutions plans to contribute its Linux kernel for the SH7760 to the CELF. Lineo Solutions joined CELF in November of 2003, and has since contributed patches for the i386 and SH-4 processor architectures, which can be found on the CELF tree server.
