TheKompany ports Qtopia apps to Archos PMA400

A company selling Qtopia-based applications for Sharp's Zaurus PDA is porting its wares to the Linux-based Archos PMA400 media player. TheKompany describes the player as "a very full-featured PDA," and has so far completed ports of a secure email client, file manager, and Tetris game.

TheKompany's Qtopia-based wares include an email client and database, VoIP phone, RDP (Microsoft) thin client software, MPEG4 player, database front-end, addressbook, calendar, ogg player, ftp and photo gallery utilities, and more. Some of TheKompany's applications -- including the Expenses and Shopper products -- come with free Windows and Mac versions, demonstrating the power of the Qt/Embedded cross-platform development framework they are built on, which aims to enable binaries for diverse platforms to be compiled from the same source tree.

Applications now available for the PMA400 include:

tkcMail -- A $20 mail client that supports SMTP, POP3 (with SSL), and IMAP4 (with SSL)
tkcBlocks -- A $5 Tetris-like game
tkcExplorer -- A $15 file manager that "knows how to deal with the variety of file formats used on the Archos," according to TheKompany. Includes find, copy, move, delete, rename, open, and launch capabilities

TheKompany President Shawn Gordon said, "We are porting the applications as fast as we can. Everything that has a native port for the clamshell Zauruses will be available on the Archos. We're working on tkcCard and tkcJabber next."

Gordon adds that TheKompany may also port its applications to the OMAP-based Nokia 770 announced yesterday.
