| Linux-based photoframe boasts WiFi, video support |
Jan. 11, 2008
AgfaPhoto is shipping a Linux-based digital photoframe developed by Sagem Communications and powered by Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC). The AgfaPhoto AF5080W is said to offer an 8-inch, 800x600 SVGA display, WiFi, and playback of MP3 music and MPEG 1/2/4 video.
Equipped with Freescale's media-friendly i.MX31 SoC, which has an ARM11 core running at 532MHz, the AF5080W is more versatile than previous AgfaPhoto AF50x photoframes. The AF5080W comes with 128MB of RAM, and offers WiFi, USB, and a 5-in-1 memory card reader that supports SD cards of up to 16GB.

Audio and video playback capabilities are said to include formats used by reflex digital cameras, such as MJPEG, MPEG4, and H.264, as well as the ability to play MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos from a set-top box (STB). Unlike previous AgfaPhoto AF50x digital photoscreens, the "W" model offers a more stable tripod base.

Availability
There was no information on the pricing or availability of the Agfaphoto AF5080W, which will initially go on sale in Europe, but will then be sold to a global audience. The product should eventually appear on AgfaPhoto's photoframe page where there is information on the earlier AF5080M, which lacks WiFi or video playback capabilities.
