Single board computer (SBC) vendor Kontron plans to ship MontaVista Software's carrier grade Linux distribution with its AdvancedTCA and Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) platforms, beginning later this year. The integrated hardware/software bundles will support "rapidly growing demand" among "top 10" telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) for highly-available, standards-based, carrier-grade platforms, Kontron says.

According to Kontron, AdvancedTCA is the emerging "de facto" standard for communications and network equipment, and is projected to reach several billion dollars in revenues within the next two years.

Kontron recently launched a new line of AdvancedTCA-compliant platforms including system chassis, high-performance AdvancedTCA processing blades, and high-availability base fabric switches. Through a licensing arrangement with MontaVista, Kontron will integrate MontaVista's Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) with all of its current and next-generation AdvancedTCA platform solutions, it says.

MontaVista CGE, which targets telecommunications and data communications networking applications -- including SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node), GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), RNC (Radio Network Controller), and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) -- is said to enhance standard Linux with added real-time, high-availability, and high-reliability features based on the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) Carrier Grade Linux specification as well as the Service Availability Forum specifications.
