Neoware stirs virtualization tech into thin client soup

Neoware this week unveiled a new line of virtualization-oriented thin client devices. The "virtual desktop initiative" edition (VDI Edition) line initially comprises specially equipped versions of the company's popular c50 and e140 clients, and m100 mobile client, Neoware said.

According to Neoware, the VDI Edition products -- dubbed c50 VDI, e140 VDI, and m100 VDI -- are equipped with "fully compatible" support for the "leading" virtualization technologies in the PC market. These include VMware's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), IBM's Virtual Client solution (VCS), and Citrix's Dynamic Desktop Initiative (DDI).

Additionally, the VDI Editions include support for Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and the latest version of Citrix ICA; are compatible with connection brokers from Leostream and Propero; are certified as Citrix Ready; and are compatible with the Citrix Dynamic Desktop Initiative, the company said.

The "entry level" c50 VDI runs Neolinux, the company's customized Linux-based embedded operating system, while the e140 VDI and m100 VDI are based on Windows XP Embedded software platforms.

m100 VDI Edition
- Flash memory -- 512MB
- RAM -- 512MB
- Compatibility -- Citrix ICA 9, Remote Desktop Protocol 6, LeoStream, Propero-Ready, Neoware TeemTalk
- OS -- Microsoft Windows XP Embedded 1.4.2

Other configurations of these models -- presumably including larger RAM/flash memory amounts, or substituting NeoLinux for Windows XPe or vice versa -- are available on request, Neoware says.

The c50 VDI, e140 VDI, and m100 VDI thin client devices are immediately available, priced at $280, $700, and $850, respectively.
