An annual technical and business conference devoted to smartphones of all stripes, including Linux smartphones, is set for Sept. 11, in Los Angeles. This year's Smartphone Summit is co-located with the CTIA Wireless Show, Sept. 12-14, but requires separate registration.
The Smartphone Summit will feature a keynote address on "Global trends in the mobile market," by Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford. Symbian co-founder and executive VP of research David Wood, an eloquent advocate of smartphones, will also speak.
Another featured event will be a "device showcase," in which representatives of Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Palm, and RIM will demonstrate their latest products.
In all, the Summit will include an analyst roundtable, plus about 15 sessions on topics such as internationalization and vertical markets, VoIP, usability, carrier technologies, GPS/LBS, security, entertainment/interactivity, and enabling legacy application integration.
Of special interest to Linux device enthusiasts: Trolltech CTO Benoit Schillings will moderate a panel discussion entitled "Unifying Linux for mobile phones -- fact or fiction?" The panel will include Trolltech CEO Haavard Nord, Motolora VP Christy Wyatt, Opera executive VP Timo Bruns, YuHua TelTech COO Zheng (Paul) Chen, and analysts Tony Rizzo, of the 451 Group, and Madeline Duva, of 3rd Eye Consulting.
In addition to a one-day program of talks and sessions on Sept. 11, the Smartphone Summit will sponsor an Enterprise Mobility Pavilion on the CTIA show floor. The pavilion will showcase mobile and wireless hardware, software, and accessories, and will be staffed by representatives of manufacturers, carriers, and service providers.
