Auerbach Publications is shipping a book about embedded Linux. Embedded Linux System Design and Development targets systems architects and software developers, and covers the MTD (Memory Technology Device) Flash storage device model, POSIX.1b real-time extensions, uClinux, and porting from traditional real-time operating systems to Linux.

According to its publisher, the new embedded Linux book was co-authored by three software engineers working in the embedded field in Bangalore, India. The three include P. Raghavan, of Philips Innovation Campus, and Amol Lad and Sriram Neelakandan, of Verismo Networks.

The book is said to offer practical advice about writing, debugging, and profiling embedded Linux applications and drives. It covers:

BSP (board support package) architecture
Serial, I2C, and USB gadget drivers
uClinux architecture and programming model
Embedded Linux graphics subsystems
Methods to reduce system boot time, optimize memory and storage, and find memory leaks and corruption in applications

Co-author Lad stated, "Explaining the issues that arise out of the use of Linux in embedded systems, the book facilitates movement to embedded Linux from traditional real-time operating systems, and describes the system design model containing embedded Linux."

The 432-page book is available now, from Taylor & Francis CRC Press, priced at $70.
