Mainz, Germany -- (press release excerpt) -- Sysgo Real-Time Solutions today announced an English version of its development environment for embedded Linux -- ELinOS v2.0. Nearly 500 companies are currently using ELinOS in the German speaking market, according to the company, leading to the claim that "ELinOS is the best selling Embedded Linux toolchain in the region."

ELinOS is based on Linux Kernel 2.4 and thereby provides the latest Linux features such as Journaling Flash File System (JFFS), Memory Technology Devices (MTD), and extensive support for USB. Besides supporting popular x86 processors and boards, ELinOS v2.0 now also supports PowerPC and will add ARM support in Q4/2001. The PowerPC version includes the PPCBoot firmware and ready-to-run environments for several popular PowerPC based boards.

Support for real-time tasks is available through the Real-Time Application Interface (RTAI) kernel extension. Additionally, ELinOS has been extended with respect to the kernel configuration tool ("ELK") which includes a graphical user interface for creating directly bootable ROM images; ELK 2.0 provides a root-filesystem editor which can manage several kernels at the same time. The ELinOS CD also contains the latest BusyBox (version 0.51) with extended shell and mini-vi-editor.

The ELinOS development environment supports engineers in rapidly developing embedded systems based on Linux. To this end, ELinOS includes numerous tools and examples that ease the task of developing applications with minimized memory demands in order to target resource-constrained systems such as cell phones, PDAs, and other appliance-like devices. The ELinOS CD includes preconfigured, well-documented standard profiles covering numerous typical embedded situations. This includes boot strategies for ROM, floppy, flash-disk, network-boot, etc. A detailed manual explains the toolchain and covers the specifics of using Linux in embedded environments.

Sysgo Real Time Solutions (GmbH) was founded in Mainz, Germany in 1991 and currently has 35 employees. The company is focused on providing operating system software and support to customers designing and producing embedded systems. Sysgo is a founding member of the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC). Major Sysgo customers include DaimlerChrysler, VDO, Raytheon, Rockwell-Collins, Rohde&Schwarz, and Siemens.
