BlueCat RT
[Vendor: LynuxWorks, Inc.]

Real-time Linux for affordable real-time performance

BlueCat Linux Advantages . . .
  • Real-time functionality-extends Linux applications with deterministic real-time features
  • Cost-effectiveness-supports real-time applications at a fraction of the cost of full, hard real-time operating systems
  • Backed by LynuxWorks-integrates superior stable technologies and comprehensive support from the embedded Linux and real-time computing leader
BlueCat RT from LynuxWorks combines responsive real-time performance with the open source benefits of Linux-for a fraction of the cost of a full, hard real-time kernel. This means that you can now extend deterministic real-time functionality-such as time-critical interrupt handling-to Linux applications without sacrificing such standard Linux attributes as cost-effectiveness, openness, and compactness.

And because BlueCat RT is from LynuxWorks, a long-time leader in real-time operating systems and embedded Linux, you gain the long-term support, rich open programming environment, and access to embedded expertise you need for your end-product's long-term success.

Embedded Linux with hard real-time features

BlueCat RT enhances the proven BlueCat Linux distribution from LynuxWorks with a number of facilities to make embedded Linux applications more responsive. All the scalability, Linux compatibility, and other values of BlueCat Linux are preserved.

BlueCat RT ensures time-critical handling of interrupts and other low level hardware operations by implementing a full Linux kernel as a thread of a smaller and highly responsive real-time operating system. This miniature RTOS traps interrupts and other low level functions for preliminary processing before passing them on to the thread running Linux.

The two operating systems provide a hybrid solution running on the same processor, with a majority of the application operating within Linux and a subset making use of the real-time performance of the RTLinux kernel. This makes BlueCat RT an ideal solution for applications that can benefit from a measure of real-time performance, but for most tasks and features, real-time is not required.

Other BlueCat RT facilities include a native, real-time API, compatible with the POSIX small system profile. Applications that do not require the full facilities of Linux can be run under this layer. Communications facilities are also provided to enable real-time tasks to communicate with Linux tasks.

Stability and flexibility

Like its BlueCat Linux foundation, BlueCat RT is a stable, commercial-grade embedded operating system release designed for flexibility, scalability, and immediate productivity.

BlueCat RT supports a full range of configurations-from small consumer-type devices to large-scale multi-CPU systems.

Productivity and time-to-market

Developers can be immediately productive in leveraging the Linux and real-time technologies of BlueCat RT through a wide array of board support packages and popular integrated development environments.
  • CodeWarrior IDE Edition, a LynuxWorks specific version of the industry's most popular Integrated Development Environment (IDE) -- the award-winning CodeWarrior 6.0 from Metrowerks
  • VisualLynux, which lets BlueCat RT developers tap the power and ease of Microsoft Visual C++/Visual Studio for Windows
Use of these and other bundled LynuxWorks tools such as the SpyKer system trace analyzer helps speed time-to-market while ensuring optimized performance for BlueCat RT-based applications.

Committed to long-term success

Even as LynuxWorks pioneers real-time Linux, you can be assured of our commitment to your long-term success. Like all LynuxWorks OS implementations, BlueCat RT deployments can be supported for an unprecedented 15 years. BlueCat RT is also subjected to the same rigorous ISO 9001 qualified test procedures that qualify BlueCat Linux and the LynxOS real-time operating system.

No other vendor comes close to LynuxWorks' decade and a half of experience in real-time and embedded operating systems based on the UNIX model-the same model that defines Linux. LynuxWorks has supported more than 1 million deployed targets worldwide. Our deep knowledge of UNIX-based embedded systems is leveragable by our customers in the form of expert consulting and professional services that cover the entire life cycle of their embedded applications.

All this makes LynuxWorks a solid, safe and robust partner, regardless of where your real-time and embedded computing needs take you.
