Metrowerks Platform Creation Suite for Linux OS
[Vendor: Metrowerks]

Metrowerks Platform Creation Suite for Linux OS is a tools framework supporting each step of an embedded product's development cycle from conception to market. Fully integrated with Linux solutions for ARM, ColdFire, MIPS, PPC, SH, and x86 architectures, it allows developers to concentrate their efforts on creating custom applications -- where their real value lies, instead of dwelling on hardware, OS, and development board issues.

Metrowerks Platform Creation Suite for Linux OS consists of three core components:
  • Target Wizard Tools -– used to manage, configure, extend, build, and deploy traditional open source Linux software elements.

  • CodeWarrior IDE -– used to project manage, create, and build your value added software which sits on top of the open source foundation.

  • Board Support Packages -– include all of the elements which are required to build, deploy and debug the operating system, device drivers and applications on specific hardware reference platforms.
Target Wizard Tools

The Target Wizard Tools are a core element of the Metrowerks Platform creation Suite for Linux OS. These GUI tools manage the configuration, build and deployment of Linux OS components, to fully support your specific product requirements.

Target Wizard menu

The Target Wizard tools allow you to build a product completely from the Linux components included within the Board Support Package (BSP). They also provide you with the ability to extend that baseline Linux environment with thousands of downloadable open source or binary applications, GNU tools (e.g. compilers), new Linux kernels or kernel enhancements for improved device support, security, real-time performance, quality of service, or networking. This capability gives you the ability to customize the Linux operating system exactly the way you want for your product and your production hardware.

The Target Wizard tools not only help the individual developer, but they speed your product team's development cycle with features such as: project log files, board pre-configurations, email-able user defined pre-configurations, and easy sharing and installation of new target applications and host tools using the Linux Package Format.

CodeWarrior IDE

The second core element of the Metrowerks Platform Creation Suite is the CodeWarrior IDE. The CodeWarrior IDE is designed to make the creation of your value-add software as smooth and easy as possible, and includes the full IDE feature set for project creation, build, and deployment.

More information about CodeWarrior IDE is available here.

Board Support Packages (BSP)

The fast pace of consumer electronics demands a solution which is known to work out of the box so that you can reach market in the shortest time possible. The Metrowerks BSP is tested, certified and frozen, ensuring a fully operational tool chain, kernel and board specific modules that are ready to use together within a fixed configuration. This BSP provides the foundation you need to begin your project quickly.

Board Support Packages, available for several boards within the ARM, ColdFire, MIPS, PowerPC, SH, and X86 families, plug into the Target Wizard tools suite framework, to provide a fully functional board specific Linux solutions comprised of:
  • Linux kernel
  • Device drivers
  • Applications/Services
  • Libraries
  • GNU Tools (compilers, linkers, etc.)
  • Deployment Wizards
If you are a reference platform vendor, we give you the ability to customize a BSP specific to your own hardware. The result will be fully integrated with the Platform Creation Suite tools, providing your customers with the ability to configure, build, deploy and customize the Linux OS for your hardware products.
